Verified Reviewer- - Epson XP-5200; Staples starter ink worked well.
- - Inkfarm cartridges worked until Epson's update.
- - Update forces Epson cartridges.
I bought an Epson XP-5200 printer from Staples three months ago. It came with the smallest printer ink refills that they make which worked fine.
Subsequently I purchased replacement ink cartridges from Inkfarm when these small Epson cartridges ran out.
The replacement cartridges worked perfectly until .. Epson sent out an 'update' for this printer.
After the 'update' nothing works ... UNLESS I buy Epson replacement cartridges.
This is not right and implies that they are attempting to corner the market on their cartridges and restrict competing companies from selling their products in the ink cartridge market.
Has anyone else brought this issue up and is it illegal to restrict competition in this way.
I think this move by Epson stinks and I would urge anyone to shy away fom this printer manufacturer.
User's recommendation: I would avoid Epson Printers and Inks

After firmware update, cartridges not recognized
- - Firmware update prevents cartridge recognition.
- - Rumors say Epson blocks third-party cartridges; a $5 downgrade exists and a cheaper printer.
I Installed a firmware update, and now the printer can no longer "recognize" my print cartridges which had been working fine until the update. Word on the Internet is that Epson deliberately tries to punish people who buy replacement cartridges from other vendors, so they can sell their overpriced ones, and they do that by updating the firmware so that other vendor cartridges are "not recognized".
This is despicable. I will never buy another Epson product. They have even spawned a cottage industry that for $5 sells a firmware downgrade.
It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy Epson replacement cartridges. Their business practices are predatory and should be illegal.

Verified ReviewerWaste Ink Counter Error Scam (epson is all lowercase to show what I think of them)
- - XP-810: scanner feeder failed; waste ink counter locks the device.
- - Resetting WIC via third parties is costly and viewed as planned obsolescence.
I hope someone is filing a broad scope lawsuit against all inkjet printer companies that are working the "Waste Ink Counter" scam. Give a warning.
Do not shut the printer completely down. This is nothing short of "RANSOM-WARE" because they force you to use a third party to buy their reset code. My xp-810 was not dead yet, but the scam counter had it "bricked". This is CRIMINAL!
You are forced to pay the $10 RANSOM for the code that they sell to the 3rd party. Shame on ALL!
The scanner feeder has been dead for most of that time but we just ignored that. Lately the whole thing died with the Waste Ink Counter Error locking the system. I could do nothing until I used a third party trial that only reset WIC back to 80%. The full reset key costs $10 from them (each time).
This is a scam that epson and others have devised to demonstrate what they actually think of their loyal customers. We know epson has the key to flash the eprom memory to do a full reset because it is provided to their technicians. But they and others are greedy and think their customers and too stupid to handle changing waste ink pads and resetting on our own. Shame on you printer companies!
You want us (the ones you claim to care about) to spend $75 to $100 just to get to keep using your product that we purchased in good faith. Again, SHAME on you ALL! I see that other countries are passing laws to prevent companies from "building in" planned obsolescence of their products. That's what this is under the guise of protecting the customer and the environment.
Environment!? How many of these things go to the landfill unecessarly because of your greed and disrespect of your customers. In my case, former customer! Next time I will support the company that doesn't treat us like fools.
Notice. One photo shows the printer front right lifted with no ink overflow under the waste pads and tank.
Please remove your "Kill-Switch" counter. We'll take responsibility for our furniture.
- Now they suck
Preferred solution: The full, permanent reset key for waste ink counter. Warnings are fine but, don't shut us down!
User's recommendation: Find a printer company that doesn't cripple your system over a resolvable error. I think a class-action law suit is in order.

Verified Reviewer |Worst Experience Ever
Bought Epson printer ET-4950, recertified, directly from Epson with 1 year warranty, 30 day money back guarantee. The printer arrived as if brand new.
No damage, ink *** were empty. Looks like it was never used. So, had high hopes. 30 minutes into using it?
Nope, not at all. Printer jammed after every 2nd or 3rd page, forget using 2 sided printing, that was even worse, and the printer would often report "no paper in tray" even though it had half a stack or more. Day 1, called support and after 30 minutes of providing info, was told, "oh, we just take info, we cannot assist, you'll need to call this other number with this reference number..." Fine. Called 2nd number, "oh we cannot even help you until you send pictures of the printer error on the screen, the serial number, the original purchase receipt, a copy of your original support ticket, picture of the ink well level and pictures of the ink bottles..." So did all that, and had to wait another day, called back in and got, "We can't help you, you did not send a picture of the ink bottles..." Um, what?
You mean the empty ink bottles I threw away on day one after filling the printer? Why would I have kept those? Then, finally, "Ok, we'll RMA the printer. We need a credit card for us to send you the replacement.." Uh, no.
"Ok, you can send your printer back and we'll send the replacement once we receive it..." Uh no. I want you to honor the 30 day return policy and just refund my money once you have the printer. It's only been two weeks since purchase... "Uh, can you please hold?
I need to discuss with a supervisor..." 30 minutes later, still on hold and then, Oh, we cant help you. You need to call this other phone number if you want to return and get a refund. Are you effing kidding me? Really?
Epson's customer service, which is obviously in ***, is horrible. They are given a script to follow to do everything they can to discourage the buyer from being able to return the product for a refund. You sold me a broken printer, with warranty and 30 day return policy, yet, almost 3 weeks in, I'm still struggling to get them to take responsibility for this SNAFU. Ive been working in IT for 35 years, I think I know a thing or two about printers.
Probably have installed and used hundreds of printers over those years. This has been absolutely the worst printer and customer service experience.
Give me a break. This should be illegal and punishable.
- After this what pros
- Entire experience
User's recommendation: Buy from a big box office store that has a return policy where you can just take it back. keep all of the original packing for at lest the first 30 days.

- - Epson ET-5170 won't print from Print Preview; it uses System Dialog.
- - Needs simple, email-based guidance because the user is hard of hearing.
I have an Epson ET-5170. I don't know a lot about computers, but in the past, all I had to do to print something was to go to Print Preview, select the printer, which was always the correct number above, and print.
Suddenly, it doesn't want to take that command, and every time I try, in place of the printer number, it has Print Using System Dialog. Even if I change it, it pops back and then doesn't print. It's like it turns off the communication. What do I do?
Please make it easy to understand so I can fix it. I am 83 and really computer-stupid. My husband has always taken care of everything, but unfortunately, he recently died, and I am alone now.
I am also hard of hearing, so I prefer email to phone calls.

Verified Reviewer |It has been 4 days since Epson was contacted, and still no reply. I remain unable to print and do not know how to proceed.
My Epson ET-2800 will not print. I have followed the protocols for nozzle and head cleaning.
When instructed that my print pad needed to be changed, I ordered the part and did the installation.
I now receive the screen which instructs me, 'The ink pad needs service - Contact Epson.' So I am contacting Epson. Your help will be much appreciated.

Well, Ive entered this password about 11 times so far in the last three or four years why the *** wont it hold the password? Why would it drop out? Also why do I need to enter a password to use my printer?
It should just auto connect based on my Wi-Fi. Done.

User's recommendation: Sell printers that auto connect without entering passwords on printer itself
