Do not stand behind their customers
I have used Epson printers for years. They have been fabulous.
They have been put to the test and worked very hard. I had to buy a new one. I bought extra life ink cartridges. Their setup instructions did not tell me I had to use the initial cartridges they sent.
I installed the high capacity cartridges; within printing 400 pages, the ink ran dry. It's supposed to last for something like 8,000 to 9,000 pages. I spent two hours on the phone with them today. They will not stand behind their product.
I have a very large company. I will not be using any of their products again. It's 85 bucks for those ink cartridges. I'm not a happy camper in any sense of the imagination.
Don't buy these products. They will not stand behind them.
- Good printers
Preferred solution: Ink cartridges replaced at their expense.
User's recommendation: They do not stand behind their products!
After firmware update, cartridges not recognized
I Installed a firmware update, and now the printer can no longer "recognize" my print cartridges which had been working fine until the update. Word on the Internet is that Epson deliberately tries to punish people who buy replacement cartridges from other vendors, so they can sell their overpriced ones, and they do that by updating the firmware so that other vendor cartridges are "not recognized".
This is despicable. I will never buy another Epson product. They have even spawned a cottage industry that for $5 sells a firmware downgrade.
It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy Epson replacement cartridges. Their business practices are predatory and should be illegal.

I bought an Epson XP-5200 printer from Staples three months ago. It came with the smallest printer ink refills that they make which worked fine.
Subsequently I purchased replacement ink cartridges from Inkfarm when these small Epson cartridges ran out.
The replacement cartridges worked perfectly until .. Epson sent out an 'update' for this printer.
After the 'update' nothing works ... UNLESS I buy Epson replacement cartridges.
This is not right and implies that they are attempting to corner the market on their cartridges and restrict competing companies from selling their products in the ink cartridge market.
Has anyone else brought this issue up and is it illegal to restrict competition in this way.
I think this move by Epson stinks and I would urge anyone to shy away fom this printer manufacturer.
User's recommendation: I would avoid Epson Printers and Inks

Verified Reviewer |Resolved: Horrible Printer and Horrible customer service
Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with product replacement. They sent me a refurbished printer. Continue to call them, otherwise they'll keep you waiting with, " you'll get an email when your printer has shipped.".
Unable to get a replacement printer because they are backordered. This is a printer for my business. They are unable to give me a date that a replacement printer will be mailed out to me. They refuse to give me a refund because of their warranty policies.
I called today to find out the status, and they still are backordered. One thought: they are backordered because they have to replace so many printers. This printer is a lemon. Do not buy.
I had to purchase a Canon Megatank to complete my orders for my online business. The Canon printer's colors are truer to my computer screen, and the ink dries much faster than the Epson 8550.
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: Do not purchase ANY printer from Epson. They are horrible.

Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with product or service ordered. I finally got hold of a sales representative after 6 calls to speak with a sales representative.
Cannot get hold of sales representatives. Need to order printer cartridges. Need response as soon as possible.
Preferred solution: Place an order.

Bad experience with product and support
My experience with Epson product and support has been very bad.
I bought an epson projector. Firstly, the projector keep having issues with hdmi compatibility.
Then suddenly the projector stopped working. The support has been shocking. I contacted them repeatedly over several weeks because my LS300B projector is stuck in a boot loop with blue lights. All I asked for was basic help or the firmware file that could potentially fix the issue.
Instead of offering any real support, they gave me the same useless answer every time: buy a new projector.
They ignored multiple emails, never addressed the actual technical problem, and didnt even bother to reply after my follow-ups.
Its unbelievable that a company selling premium electronics cant provide a simple firmware file or basic troubleshooting guidance.
At this point, its clear Epson support is more interested in pushing customers to purchase replacement units than actually helping solve a fixable issue. Very disappointing and a huge red flag for anyone considering their products.
User's recommendation: Do not buy epson projectors

Verified ReviewerFirmware update made printer inoperable
Problem connecting to Wi-Fi since day 1. After the latest firmware update, the printer stopped recognizing non-Epson print cartridges.
Can't pass the error screen; I don't have the cable needed to roll back the firmware.
There's no way to contact Epson via email or live chat. They effectively brick your printer if you don't buy their ink.
- Horrible product and customer service
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: Do not buy Epson products!

Verified Reviewer |Firmware Update Downloaded - Now Printer Does not Print
Do not trust Epson. Very deceptive with firmware updates.
Printer kept prompting for a firmware update. Once completed, the printer would no longer recognize the ink cartridges in my printer.
Now I have a full set of ink (plus a replacement set) that no longer works with my printer. Very deceptive practice, and it is impossible to reach customer service. I will not be extorted over printer ink. Epson can make it right by supplying at least one set of new ink cartridges and a little warning about the repercussions.
Stay away would have been welcomed.
Half a day wasted while working, trying to troubleshoot with no immediate access to ink. Thanks.
- Copier and scanner
- Great printer
- Lack of transparency
Preferred solution: One set of Epson ink cartridges to make it right for the deceptive Firmware update

Verified Reviewer |WF-3820 Junk / Worst Customer Service EVER
Bought al-in-one in March...has NEVER worked properly...whether it's OEM ink or after market...scanning...copying...color clarity. Absolute crap. Cannot get a response from EPSON to replace.
- Poor customer service
- Poor quality
Preferred solution: replacement
User's recommendation: Avoid EPSON!
So others know what I have dealt with, along with many others
Epson online is completely unreliable, rude to the highest level. I tried to return it after I saw the same printer on another (reliable) company's website that was half the cost.
They did nothing at all about helping me return it. They said they were emailing return label but never did.
I got tired and eventually contacted my credit card and filed a dispute against them. If you want an Epson product, do not order directly from them.
User's recommendation: don't order directly from Epson online

Verified ReviewerResolved: $257 FOR A PRINTER THAT ARRIVED DAMAGED AND WE ARE STUCK!
Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with full refund.
I am going to buy a lottery ticket later today -after battling with Amazon and Epson for seven long months, they agreed to issue a refund and sent a return shipping label. I will REALLY believe this is over once I receive my funds, but this is victory, pure and simple!I have to thank this marvelous website because I have to think that Pissed Consumer either intervened OR Epson/Amazon read my review and my correspondence.
Also. Amazon is scared witless because of an August 25th data breach, so I smell a gigantic lawsuit. Serves them right. My message to all: PERSIST,.
DON'T GIVE UP and KEEP IN MIND THAT RIGHT IS ON YOUR SIDE! Many THANKS TO ALL!
I am filing a complaint with the BBB - NO RESPONSE FROM EPSON AND ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - I WILL PREVAIL~!
Have YET to hear back from Epson after two tries. Any and all suggestions about this travesty would be most welcomed.
Just sent an email on the Epson.com website. Will wait for response via email.
Amazon flat out refuses to refund me and I just contacted Epson, I will keep you posted.
The item cost $179, including tax and shipping, totaling $257. However, because a month passed from the time we purchased it from Amazon until this issue arose, we missed the return deadline; therefore, Amazon is equally to blame, if not more so. After several attempts to call them, they refused, and we're out over $250 with a useless printer.
I am livid, and I will live with this, Pissed Consumer. Enough is enough.
- Affordable purchase price
- Past printer
- Customer service cannot comprehend emailed complaints
- Shade practices with defective products and warranty
Preferred solution: Full refund

My replacement printer hasn't arrived yet
I want my new printer that I am still waiting for the delivery from your company. I sent you my old printer to be replaced by a new one and it still hasn't arrived.
I called in regards to this order and they told me I would hear back within 24 to 48 hours.
It's been around 2 weeks. I'm trying to call now but it's giving me some *** story that they open 7 to 4 Pacific time and you're not open.
Preferred solution: Deliver product or service ordered

Verified ReviewerPrinter stopped working after warranty
I'm very unhappy. I just bought this.
I used it about five times, and it stopped working, and customer service tells me that it's a hardware failure and that they will give me a discount to buy a new one. I am not buying a new one. I want my money back. This is ridiculous.
I barely use this printer, and it just decides not to work.
I'm very upset! This is a gamut.
- Works great when it works
- Hardware failure after warranty runs out
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: DO NOT BUY!! THEY ARE WORTHLESS.
Print cartridges
Did not even get any options to ask a question about my issues. Most useless call. If it's customer support, then support; don't give a runaround.
Preferred solution: support for using the product

*****DO NOT BUY EPSON PRINTERS...READ THIS FIRST***** I have been a long-time user of Epson printers, but I am extremely disappointed with the company's decision to block aftermarket ink cartridges through firmware updates. This tactic feels deceptive and unfair, as it forces loyal customers like myself to purchase Epson's overpriced ink.
Printers are expensive enough, and this approach adds unnecessary financial burden.
I believe customers should have the freedom to choose affordable alternatives without being penalized by restrictive firmware. This move shows a lack of care for customer satisfaction and loyalty. I hope Epson reconsiders this practice and prioritizes the needs of its users over profit. Until then, I cannot recommend Epson products to others.

Agreed to the fullest.
That appears to be my experience as well! I will no longer purchase another Epson. AND I will tell others!
Epson is a horrible product backed by a useless company support team. You cannot call them.
You have to email them to discuss the problem with my 3 month old printer that only prints in yellow now. After repeated useless emails from a so called support team telling me I need to replace all my ink cartridges, which still did not correct problem, They tell me to call them. Excuse me but That was the first thing I tried and it told me I had to email support team. Wow!!
How professional are these people that they do not even know what is going on in there own support network.
Nothing has ever been resolved from this mess. Very unsatisfied with Epson product and company and their useless support or warranty!
I just updated the firmware on an epson WF-2850 it now tells me 3 of 4 cartridges are empty after i just them in. i guess I'm going to pull out the HP and get some cartridges for it this epson all in one is junk
This just happened to me. I just updated and now my Epson XP5100 will not read the black cartridge.
All are refilled.
I don't print that much, I only bought this about 6 months ago. I'm going to Walmart and by a $40.00 Canon.
You can find instructions online (including some on Youtube and some much further down this thread) that tell you how to uninstall the new firmware and reinstall the old firmware. I did that a few years ago and haven't had any problems since. Just make sure to disenable automatic updates so you don't encounter the same problem again.
Boycott Epson . Their software updates refuse to accept non epson cartridges.
This is illegal.
their cartridges are massively overpriced. Dont touch with a bargepole.
I totally agree--This happened to me this past week. I am done with Epson.
Have spent 8 hours trying to fix it XP-440 as they told me to place a new Firmware update... and poof now the ink catridges that have been working for 2 years no longer works///
You need to find an older version of the Firmware and go back to that. You can find videos on youtube that tell you how to do it.
I did that several years ago and haven't had a problem since.
Circumventing Epson's efforts to force me to buy their ink cartridges was very satisfying. Never update your Firmware, no matter what Epson tells you.
I am so livid right now. I want to throw my printer outside in the street.
My ink was working great and now boom. What a bunch of jerks.
Same. will NEVER EVER EVER get back together (with Epson). You are dead to me!
I am experiencing the same issue and I will never buy another Epson product again if I verify this is correct. After a firmware update, new cartridges that were working no longer works!
Same problem. This is like if auto manufacturers made cars that would only run on Mobil gas, or would only accept Firestone tires.
They would be sued out of existence. So why is Epson allowed to get away with it?
after update. my printer will not recognize 2 of the 4 cartridge's that were already in use.
Same!!!!!!!!!
I too will never buy Epson products again. My printer is almost brand new and now locked into "add Epson Ink" Hoping there is away around the $100 ink package.
Printer repair and aftermarket supplies reseller here. For those that have downloaded the firmware updates by Epson and they bricked your printer, just be aware that HP does this as well.
Brother is starting to use smart chips. So before you shoot yourself in the foot, Buyer Beware. To avoid bricking, always, always, disable automatic updates and never update the firmware unless you have an issue that can be corrected by it. Even then, make sure your supplier is selling current chip versions.
I wouldn't trust many of the sellers on Amazon, nor many on the internet in general to sell you current product. The quality aftermarket companies are working on updating their chips, but it takes time. Most, if not all, of the aftermarket cartridges for EPSON come from overseas (China). There are only a few aftermarket chip makers in the world and they specialized in different market segments.
Manufacturers have lost recent cases in court on this issue and in the past, and are constantly being sued by practices like this. EPSON has a pending case in Federal Court against them. HP may as well. The cases will take time, but by the time it is resolved, your printer will be outdated and not working.
The manufacturers must be very careful on how they present these updates to the consumer, they cannot be sneaky about it, so read everything before purchasing their products (printer, cartridges, the prompts during set-up, go through the menus to disable the updates...everything). They are under no obligation to give away their market share or make it easy for aftermarket companies, though they are prohibited from bundling and forcing you to purchase their products (Magnuson-Moss ACT of 1975). Another note, Manufacturers like EPSON, CANON and HP will also sue the aftermarket companies preemptively on patent infringements (chips, cartridge components and design, etc.) to stop or slow the erosion of their very profitable market.
Personally, I would never recommend an EPSON printer and not because of this reason but the product is trash from a service perspective. The EPSON Ink printers have a slew of issues with their print heads and have for years.
Thank you
i agree completely! i refuse to spend high dollar on epson ink just because they are a bunch of greedy bastards. i will NEVER buy another epson product or recommend epson to anybody for the rest of my life
