After firmware update, cartridges not recognized

I Installed a firmware update, and now the printer can no longer "recognize" my print cartridges which had been working fine until the update. Word on the Internet is that Epson deliberately tries to punish people who buy replacement cartridges from other vendors, so they can sell their overpriced ones, and they do that by updating the firmware so that other vendor cartridges are "not recognized". This is despicable. I will never buy another Epson product. They have even spawned a cottage industry that for $5 sells a firmware downgrade. It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy Epson replacement cartridges. Their business practices are predatory and should be illegal.

Epson is a horrible product backed by a useless company support team. You cannot call them.

You have to email them to discuss the problem with my 3 month old printer that only prints in yellow now. After repeated useless emails from a so called support team telling me I need to replace all my ink cartridges, which still did not correct problem, They tell me to call them. Excuse me but That was the first thing I tried and it told me I had to email support team. Wow!!

How professional are these people that they do not even know what is going on in there own support network.

Nothing has ever been resolved from this mess. Very unsatisfied with Epson product and company and their useless support or warranty!

I just updated the firmware on an epson WF-2850 it now tells me 3 of 4 cartridges are empty after i just them in. i guess I'm going to pull out the HP and get some cartridges for it this epson all in one is junk

This just happened to me. I just updated and now my Epson XP5100 will not read the black cartridge.

All are refilled.

I don't print that much, I only bought this about 6 months ago. I'm going to Walmart and by a $40.00 Canon.

You can find instructions online (including some on Youtube and some much further down this thread) that tell you how to uninstall the new firmware and reinstall the old firmware. I did that a few years ago and haven't had any problems since. Just make sure to disenable automatic updates so you don't encounter the same problem again.

Have spent 8 hours trying to fix it XP-440 as they told me to place a new Firmware update... and poof now the ink catridges that have been working for 2 years no longer works///

You need to find an older version of the Firmware and go back to that. You can find videos on youtube that tell you how to do it.

I did that several years ago and haven't had a problem since.

Circumventing Epson's efforts to force me to buy their ink cartridges was very satisfying. Never update your Firmware, no matter what Epson tells you.

Im still getting a scanner error and not able to use my printer. I really need my printer its not like i used it everyday or did any big jobs, It must had a defect in it, please issue me another printer, The store I brought it at has went out of business, I probably have not used that printer 20 times.Im on a fixed income and dont have money to buy another, this is the second one I have brought, with same problem.

Epson - Unable to use product
Purchased Epson ET 2850 printer. Followed instructions but was unable to connect with iPad or laptop. Focus is on iPad now. Called Epson customer service, let the fun begin! Shaq answers. Wow! The C.S, agent asked me to repeat steps already taken per his instruction, that made sense to me. When that didnt work asked me to do it again (?) Okay. Tried again, then reloaded Epson app. Tried again. No progress. He than asked me to install an air app. Forget actual name. Loaded app, lets get started. Message from app, $9.99 to continue. Told C.S. agent No, Im not paying that. Deleted app. C.S agent wanted to continue to repeat everything we had done several times. Continued on my own. Learned Location must be on. Still no joy. Called C.S. again next day. Asked if location has to be on. He confirmed it. Curious I asked why. He decided to transfer me to another agent, call her M. She is possibly an intelligent, knowledgeable, effective agent. Ill never know because I could not understand a word she said. Asked to be transferred to first agent, on hold several minutes and M comes back on line. Communication skills no better this time around. Thanked her and hung up. Decided to cal Epson sales line. I know Customer Service is not their job. Talked to a young lady that was very interested in the issue but did not have the answer but would transfer me to someone who would. After being on hold a few minutes a fellow (J) came on the line. Even though this was not his primary job he was extremely helpful. We went over parameters for installation etc. ready to start again Next day start fresh. Reinstalled app for probably 7th time. Followed instructions, get to the end, the printer still wont connect to my iPad. Dark thoughts. Printer could not be more impervious to my efforts if it was encased in 10 of armor plate I am not a Tech guy. I have however installed at least half a dozen printers in the last several years in addition to other items. Im about done with this printer. Will wait till Monday to decide but may just admit that the score is Epson 1, me 0. Have to say HP always worked for me in the past

User's recommendation: Epson is not alone as far as poor (being kind) customer service goes but my experience with this product has hit a new low. I will be looking elsewhere for my next purchase.

Gave deadbeat printer away. Won't buy any of their products ever again.

I have had this printer for over three years now and I have hated this piece of garbage since day one. It guzzles ink worse than a drunk guzzling alcohol. I buy the XL cartridges to no avail. By the time you print out 10 or 20 pages, the thing is out of ink again. I am tired of paying nearly $60.00 for ink cartridges that don't last past a normal amount of printing. Another huge issue is the fact that I don't care how much black ink you have in the machine, if you are out of any color cartridges, it WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO PRINT IN ALL BLACK OR GRAYSCALE. It constantly demands you replace any color cartridges that are empty. I am getting ready to trash this worthless printer. I will sell the leftover black cartridges online. DON'T BUY THIS PRINTER UNLESS YOU ARE RICH. NO SUPPORT OF ANY KIND ON SATURDAY'S. Review deserves a huge ZERO STARS.

My printer still doesnt work and its under warranty! The main phone number for Epson sends you to a sweet lady that has nothing to do with Epson. The only way I got through was by using the disability phone number. I want a new printer that works. Try calling their number (562) 276-**** and hear for yourself! Extremely disappointed!

My printer won't print

The window for navigating the operation of the printer really sucks! I cant believe with todays technology, that Epson would use such a draconian system for the users input. It is completely the opposite of user friendly in all respects. I feel like I should be compensated for having to be submitted to such boneheaded design of the interface on my new printer! Cant you do a better job than this? Explain yourself!

No online chat exists for Epson apparently. I am hearing impaired and have difficulty with phone conversations. Even without being hearing impaired Epson support sucks. The person who called back on their BS leave your number and we will call line apparently speaks English as a 5th or 10th language. Could not understand a word he was speaking--accent so heavy. Just hung up as could not understand him.I just purchased ET 4850 and trying to download drivers and software, but even with printer connected directly to computer by cat6 cable can not get the printer to connect to computer.

I got no where with my issue with Epson. I just bought the ink rather than a new printer

I bought in EP 4100 In 6/22. Soon after I had to replace the black ink. Now I can't print because all color ink needs to be replaced. I never used them! In manual and a walk through with tech support there's supposed to be a way to override color replacement and use black only. It doesn't work and tech support agreed. I spent hours on this! I waited 30 minutes to talk with a supervisor who never answered. Printing is important to me. Now I'm going to have to buy a new printer. I'll buy HP never Epson!

Hi, Not media but complaint from your live chat! I was on there today chatting with she said her name Christina asking for assistance connecting the Epson printer to my IMac. She informed me that a technician will call me to provide a phone number. I did and within a few minutes my Mobil rang. I answered it . It was a Male heavy accent who told me needed access to my computer to help . gullible me complied. He had me download some weird app and I noticed he was all over the place inside my computer obviously looking for something other than what I thought he would assist with! I got suspicious and told him I will figure it out. The whole conversation troubled me and I tried to call that number but kept disconnecting. I looked it up and was a a scam number! WTH Really Epson ! I am so disappointed and troubled by your lack of protection of your customers!!!
