I bought an Epson XP-5200 printer from Staples three months ago. It came with the smallest printer ink refills that they make which worked fine.

Subsequently I purchased replacement ink cartridges from Inkfarm when these small Epson cartridges ran out.

The replacement cartridges worked perfectly until .. Epson sent out an 'update' for this printer.

After the 'update' nothing works ... UNLESS I buy Epson replacement cartridges.

This is not right and implies that they are attempting to corner the market on their cartridges and restrict competing companies from selling their products in the ink cartridge market.

Has anyone else brought this issue up and is it illegal to restrict competition in this way.

I think this move by Epson stinks and I would urge anyone to shy away fom this printer manufacturer.

User's recommendation: I would avoid Epson Printers and Inks

Hello, I am following up regarding your...

AI Highlights
  • - The printer jams and is unusable for over a month.
  • - Cancel ReadyPrint and refund charges during unusable period.
  • - Seek repair or replacement.

Hello,

I am following up regarding your response stating that my issue was resolved. That is incorrect.

My printer is still malfunctioning and continues to jam paper every time I attempt to print. I have been unable to use the printer for over a month. Despite this, I am still being charged for the ReadyPrint subscription.

Your response did not address or resolve the issue and instead redirected me without providing an actual solution. This is unacceptable.

At this point, I am formally requesting the following:

- Immediate cancellation of my ReadyPrint subscription

- A refund for all charges incurred during the period the printer has been unusable

- A clear resolution regarding the defective printer (repair or replacement)

This matter has already been ongoing for over a month. If I do not receive a satisfactory response and resolution by the end of the day tomorrow, I will proceed with filing formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), as well as disputing the charges with my financial institution.

Please treat this matter with urgency and provide a resolution immediately.

Thank you.

After firmware update, cartridges not recognized

AI Highlights
  • - Firmware update prevents cartridge recognition.
  • - Rumors say Epson blocks third-party cartridges; a $5 downgrade exists and a cheaper printer.

I Installed a firmware update, and now the printer can no longer "recognize" my print cartridges which had been working fine until the update. Word on the Internet is that Epson deliberately tries to punish people who buy replacement cartridges from other vendors, so they can sell their overpriced ones, and they do that by updating the firmware so that other vendor cartridges are "not recognized".

This is despicable. I will never buy another Epson product. They have even spawned a cottage industry that for $5 sells a firmware downgrade.

It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy Epson replacement cartridges. Their business practices are predatory and should be illegal.

That appears to be my experience as well! I will no longer purchase another Epson. AND I will tell others!

Epson is a horrible product backed by a useless company support team. You cannot call them.

You have to email them to discuss the problem with my 3 month old printer that only prints in yellow now. After repeated useless emails from a so called support team telling me I need to replace all my ink cartridges, which still did not correct problem, They tell me to call them. Excuse me but That was the first thing I tried and it told me I had to email support team. Wow!!

How professional are these people that they do not even know what is going on in there own support network.

Nothing has ever been resolved from this mess. Very unsatisfied with Epson product and company and their useless support or warranty!

I just updated the firmware on an epson WF-2850 it now tells me 3 of 4 cartridges are empty after i just them in. i guess I'm going to pull out the HP and get some cartridges for it this epson all in one is junk

Guest

This just happened to me. I just updated and now my Epson XP5100 will not read the black cartridge.

All are refilled.

I don't print that much, I only bought this about 6 months ago. I'm going to Walmart and by a $40.00 Canon.

You can find instructions online (including some on Youtube and some much further down this thread) that tell you how to uninstall the new firmware and reinstall the old firmware. I did that a few years ago and haven't had any problems since. Just make sure to disenable automatic updates so you don't encounter the same problem again.

Guest

Boycott Epson . Their software updates refuse to accept non epson cartridges.

This is illegal.

their cartridges are massively overpriced. Dont touch with a bargepole.

Guest

I totally agree--This happened to me this past week. I am done with Epson.

Guest

Have spent 8 hours trying to fix it XP-440 as they told me to place a new Firmware update... and poof now the ink catridges that have been working for 2 years no longer works///

Romi Acc
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-2000100

You need to find an older version of the Firmware and go back to that. You can find videos on youtube that tell you how to do it.

I did that several years ago and haven't had a problem since.

Circumventing Epson's efforts to force me to buy their ink cartridges was very satisfying. Never update your Firmware, no matter what Epson tells you.

Guest

I am so livid right now. I want to throw my printer outside in the street.

My ink was working great and now boom. What a bunch of jerks.

Guest

Same. will NEVER EVER EVER get back together (with Epson). You are dead to me!

Guest

I am experiencing the same issue and I will never buy another Epson product again if I verify this is correct. After a firmware update, new cartridges that were working no longer works!

Guest

Same problem. This is like if auto manufacturers made cars that would only run on Mobil gas, or would only accept Firestone tires.

They would be sued out of existence. So why is Epson allowed to get away with it?

Guest

after update. my printer will not recognize 2 of the 4 cartridge's that were already in use.

Guest

Same!!!!!!!!!

Guest

I too will never buy Epson products again. My printer is almost brand new and now locked into "add Epson Ink" Hoping there is away around the $100 ink package.

Printer repair and aftermarket supplies reseller here. For those that have downloaded the firmware updates by Epson and they bricked your printer, just be aware that HP does this as well.

Brother is starting to use smart chips. So before you shoot yourself in the foot, Buyer Beware. To avoid bricking, always, always, disable automatic updates and never update the firmware unless you have an issue that can be corrected by it. Even then, make sure your supplier is selling current chip versions.

I wouldn't trust many of the sellers on Amazon, nor many on the internet in general to sell you current product. The quality aftermarket companies are working on updating their chips, but it takes time. Most, if not all, of the aftermarket cartridges for EPSON come from overseas (China). There are only a few aftermarket chip makers in the world and they specialized in different market segments.

Manufacturers have lost recent cases in court on this issue and in the past, and are constantly being sued by practices like this. EPSON has a pending case in Federal Court against them. HP may as well. The cases will take time, but by the time it is resolved, your printer will be outdated and not working.

The manufacturers must be very careful on how they present these updates to the consumer, they cannot be sneaky about it, so read everything before purchasing their products (printer, cartridges, the prompts during set-up, go through the menus to disable the updates...everything). They are under no obligation to give away their market share or make it easy for aftermarket companies, though they are prohibited from bundling and forcing you to purchase their products (Magnuson-Moss ACT of 1975). Another note, Manufacturers like EPSON, CANON and HP will also sue the aftermarket companies preemptively on patent infringements (chips, cartridge components and design, etc.) to stop or slow the erosion of their very profitable market.

Personally, I would never recommend an EPSON printer and not because of this reason but the product is trash from a service perspective. The EPSON Ink printers have a slew of issues with their print heads and have for years.

Surprise the printer arrived today! Not acceptable at all a month this took.

Don’t purchase through them who knows when you’ll get it. Use a 3rd party.

My printer was supposed to arrive on March 11, 2026. It has been sitting in Chicago since then; today is March 23, 2026.

I hunted and hunted for a customer service number where I actually could speak to a person. I spoke to someone last week who told me to call back on Monday, which is today, and now I'm told today I should call back in three days. All I want is my printer, and it is lost in Chicago. Can you just send me a replacement quickly?

Just wondering what kind of people have nothing better to do than harass someone who got a bogus printer that does not work and all they want is the money back in order to buy a new one? Maybe they work or are hired by Epson to harass those who complain and about *** service.

Maybe they are hired to be bullies and aggressive by Epson to harass the ones who want the product they bout less than two months ago to work. So I guess it could be but you don’t scare me and make me laugh. Sitting in your mom’s basement behind a rent to own computer acting all bad while having no life.

  • - I've used Epson ink cartridges for 10+ years.
  • - An online order arrived dry; no liquid when shaken, so I'm switching to non-Epson cartridges.

I have purchased Epson Ink Cartridges for over 10 years. I've had one or two issues but nothing serious until recently.

I purchased some cartridges lately online and the whole box was DRY.

I always shake the cartridges to hear the liquid inside, but NOTHING.

They need to start rotating their stock more frequently! In the meantime, I"m going back to non-Epson cartridges because I haven't had an issue with them.

  • - The app is buggy, fails to connect, scanning doesn't work; support is hard to reach.

I paid $250 for the Epson ET-2800 and it is, honestly, a complete piece of garbage. The Epson Smart Panel app is terrible poorly designed, buggy, unreliable, and barely functional.

It constantly fails to connect, loses the printer, and scanning does not work at all, even when everything is on the same Wi-Fi network.

This printer is advertised as wireless and smart, but the software is broken and frustrating. I didnt spend $250 just to get a printer that can only print. Scanning is a basic feature, and Epson somehow managed to completely mess it up.

Customer support makes it even worse. Not available 24/7, hard to reach, and completely unhelpful when it comes to app or connection issues.

For a printer at this price, thats unacceptable.

The ink tank system does not make up for broken software, constant connection problems, and features that simply do not work.

This printer is overpriced, unreliable, and a huge disappointment. Save your money and buy literally anything else.

My Epson Ecotank 8550 quit working after 2 months. Still under warranty.

Unable to get a replacement printer because they are backordered. This is a printer for my business. They are unable to give me a date that a replacement printer will be mailed out to me. They refuse to give me a refund because of their warranty policies.

I called today to find out the status, and they still are backordered. One thought: they are backordered because they have to replace so many printers. This printer is a lemon. Do not buy.

  • - HDMI issues; projector stopped working.
  • - LS300B is in a boot loop with blue lights.
  • - Support did not provide firmware or troubleshooting.

My experience with Epson product and support has been very bad.

I bought an epson projector. Firstly, the projector keep having issues with hdmi compatibility.

Then suddenly the projector stopped working. The support has been shocking. I contacted them repeatedly over several weeks because my LS300B projector is stuck in a boot loop with blue lights. All I asked for was basic help or the firmware file that could potentially fix the issue.

Instead of offering any real support, they gave me the same useless answer every time: buy a new projector.

They ignored multiple emails, never addressed the actual technical problem, and didnt even bother to reply after my follow-ups.

Its unbelievable that a company selling premium electronics cant provide a simple firmware file or basic troubleshooting guidance.

At this point, its clear Epson support is more interested in pushing customers to purchase replacement units than actually helping solve a fixable issue. Very disappointing and a huge red flag for anyone considering their products.

User's recommendation: Do not buy epson projectors
