Verified Reviewer- - Epson XP-5200; Staples starter ink worked well.
- - Inkfarm cartridges worked until Epson's update.
- - Update forces Epson cartridges.
I bought an Epson XP-5200 printer from Staples three months ago. It came with the smallest printer ink refills that they make which worked fine.
Subsequently I purchased replacement ink cartridges from Inkfarm when these small Epson cartridges ran out.
The replacement cartridges worked perfectly until .. Epson sent out an 'update' for this printer.
After the 'update' nothing works ... UNLESS I buy Epson replacement cartridges.
This is not right and implies that they are attempting to corner the market on their cartridges and restrict competing companies from selling their products in the ink cartridge market.
Has anyone else brought this issue up and is it illegal to restrict competition in this way.
I think this move by Epson stinks and I would urge anyone to shy away fom this printer manufacturer.
User's recommendation: I would avoid Epson Printers and Inks
Circular maze of no response to contacy technical support
No effective response. No human connection.
Great product, but poor customer support.
Hire real people. You should listen to your system.
User's recommendation: Good Luck
After firmware update, cartridges not recognized
- - Firmware update prevents cartridge recognition.
- - Rumors say Epson blocks third-party cartridges; a $5 downgrade exists and a cheaper printer.
I Installed a firmware update, and now the printer can no longer "recognize" my print cartridges which had been working fine until the update. Word on the Internet is that Epson deliberately tries to punish people who buy replacement cartridges from other vendors, so they can sell their overpriced ones, and they do that by updating the firmware so that other vendor cartridges are "not recognized".
This is despicable. I will never buy another Epson product. They have even spawned a cottage industry that for $5 sells a firmware downgrade.
It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy Epson replacement cartridges. Their business practices are predatory and should be illegal.

Verified Reviewer |Worst Experience Ever
Bought Epson printer ET-4950, recertified, directly from Epson with 1 year warranty, 30 day money back guarantee. The printer arrived as if brand new.
No damage, ink wells were empty. Looks like it was never used. So, had high hopes. 30 minutes into using it?
Nope, not at all. Printer jammed after every 2nd or 3rd page, forget using 2 sided printing, that was even worse, and the printer would often report "no paper in tray" even though it had half a stack or more. Day 1, called support and after 30 minutes of providing info, was told, "oh, we just take info, we cannot assist, you'll need to call this other number with this reference number..." Fine. Called 2nd number, "oh we cannot even help you until you send pictures of the printer error on the screen, the serial number, the original purchase receipt, a copy of your original support ticket, picture of the ink well level and pictures of the ink bottles..." So did all that, and had to wait another day, called back in and got, "We can't help you, you did not send a picture of the ink bottles..." Um, what?
You mean the empty ink bottles I threw away on day one after filling the printer? Why would I have kept those? Then, finally, "Ok, we'll RMA the printer. We need a credit card for us to send you the replacement.." Uh, no.
"Ok, you can send your printer back and we'll send the replacement once we receive it..." Uh no. I want you to honor the 30 day return policy and just refund my money once you have the printer. It's only been two weeks since purchase... "Uh, can you please hold?
I need to discuss with a supervisor..." 30 minutes later, still on hold and then, Oh, we cant help you. You need to call this other phone number if you want to return and get a refund. Are you *** kidding me? Really?
Epson's customer service, which is obviously in India, is horrible. They are given a script to follow to do everything they can to discourage the buyer from being able to return the product for a refund. You sold me a broken printer, with warranty and 30 day return policy, yet, almost 3 weeks in, I'm still struggling to get them to take responsibility for this SNAFU. Ive been working in IT for 35 years, I think I know a thing or two about printers.
Probably have installed and used hundreds of printers over those years. This has been absolutely the worst printer and customer service experience.
Give me a break. This should be illegal and punishable.
- After this what pros
- Entire experience
User's recommendation: Buy from a big box office store that has a return policy where you can just take it back. keep all of the original packing for at lest the first 30 days.

Verified Reviewer |Resolved: Did not receive product
- - Printer was due March 11, 2026 and has sat in Chicago.
- - Customer had trouble reaching support and asks for a replacement to be sent quickly.
Printer finally was delivered. Yesterday early I made another call to CS and was told they’d callMe back when they found out where my replacement was and a tracking number. No call came.
Surprise the printer arrived today! Not acceptable at all a month this took.
Don’t purchase through them who knows when you’ll get it. Use a 3rd party.
I’m still here without my printer close to a month now. Frustrated angry and helpless without a printer.
I have no good advice at this point except don’t buy directly from the company. It may appear that it’s cheaper than 3rd party places but the frustration makes it 10 x worse than paying a few dollars more!
My printer was supposed to arrive on March 11, 2026. It has been sitting in Chicago since then; today is March 23, 2026.
I hunted and hunted for a customer service number where I actually could speak to a person. I spoke to someone last week who told me to call back on Monday, which is today, and now I'm told today I should call back in three days. All I want is my printer, and it is lost in Chicago. Can you just send me a replacement quickly?
I would appreciate that. Thank you.
- Nice printers
- Trying to get it delivered after purchase
- Contacting a live person to help you get it
Preferred solution: Deliver product or service ordered
User's recommendation: Buyer beware. If by chance it gets lost in transit, you a will be hard-pressed to find out a customer service number to actually talk to a person and be can expect it to take forever!

Verified Reviewer |Hello, I am following up regarding your...
- - The printer jams and is unusable for over a month.
- - Cancel ReadyPrint and refund charges during unusable period.
- - Seek repair or replacement.
Hello,
I am following up regarding your response stating that my issue was resolved. That is incorrect.
My printer is still malfunctioning and continues to jam paper every time I attempt to print. I have been unable to use the printer for over a month. Despite this, I am still being charged for the ReadyPrint subscription.
Your response did not address or resolve the issue and instead redirected me without providing an actual solution. This is unacceptable.
At this point, I am formally requesting the following:
- Immediate cancellation of my ReadyPrint subscription
- A refund for all charges incurred during the period the printer has been unusable
- A clear resolution regarding the defective printer (repair or replacement)
This matter has already been ongoing for over a month. If I do not receive a satisfactory response and resolution by the end of the day tomorrow, I will proceed with filing formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), as well as disputing the charges with my financial institution.
Please treat this matter with urgency and provide a resolution immediately.
Thank you.
Preferred solution: Repair or replacement. Stop charging me until the issue is resolved

Verified Reviewer |Printer says past due on subscription payments bank statements say different
- - Printer shows overdue subscription on display, but payments are current.
- - The user plans to cancel the subscription and switch to Epson's service.
I am experiencing an issue with my printer this morning. The device's display indicates an overdue subscription payment, yet my bank statements confirm that all payments are current.
When I contacted customer support, the representative was unhelpful and dismissive, repeatedly interrupting me and asserting that I was incorrect or fabricating information. I am seriously considering canceling my current subscription and returning the printer, and subsequently subscribing to Epson's printer service.

poor service. didnt listen to my issue.
Just wanted to get me off the phone and send me an email that Im supposed to reply to and get pictures and then come back. The pictures had nothing to do with my issue.
Poor quality product
- - Printer leaked magenta ink suddenly.
- - Contacted Epson for advice but faced complicated access requirements.
Printer suddenly began leaking Red ink (Magenta to be exact)
Tried contacting Epson for advice but was met with complicated access requirements. Finally had to give up, but this was the whole purpose behind these requirements.
NO ONE HAS SENT SHIPPING INFORMATION TO RETURN OLD PRINTER
Customer service on this site is terrible. I didn't even get a dialing ring.
I waited over two minutes.
It just says calling. There are no return emails.
Preferred solution: I have called 3x,. They kept saying they would send me shipping information about returning a printer. Last rep Samuel semt me a test email to make sure it worked. Which it did, but never received shipping info so I don't get charged.Still nothing.
Poor Quality and Customer Service
- - ET-8700 black ink cartridge stops and shows no ink.
- - Four reps didn't resolve the issue.
- - Replacement requires corporate approval.
I ordered a new black ink cartridge for the ET-8700 printer. The catridge periodically stops working and shows no ink in cartridge on the display panel.
I have called their customer service line which offers no customer support. After 4 reprsenatives and vast amounts of traboul;e shooting stil now results. It is a bad cartirdge and they won't send a new one as they need corporater approval.
The offshore India call centers are horrible. They work from a script and have no real troublshooting skills beyiond what is on that script.
I have spoken with a supervisor who was no better and wanted to beginb the gtroublshooting process all over again.,
After 1.5 hours on the phone, my only resolution wil be to go to my credit card company and deny the charge. These guys are the worst.

Verified Reviewer |I have contacted a attorney and making it well known
- - I contacted an attorney and will warn others about Epson non-support; printer fails after advice, past 30-day window, and service is poor.
I have contacted an attorney and am going to all social media to let anyone who has been turned away from Epson by non-support and is stuck with a 6-week printer that doesn't work join in. I have done everything, even changed internet companies per Epson's advice, and nothing makes this printer work properly.
I was going to take it back to the store, but the receipt said 30 days, and I am past that.
You have no customer service, and when someone does do something, they blame the purchaser, the internet, and tell you it is on you, not their problem. I have the snapshots of all my talks and the recorded calls.
- Printer never works ever
Preferred solution: I would like the printer to work or my money back
User's recommendation: RUN DO NOT BUY THIS UNABLE TO WORK JUNK
Ink Cartridges are dried out of low
- - I've used Epson ink cartridges for 10+ years.
- - An online order arrived dry; no liquid when shaken, so I'm switching to non-Epson cartridges.
I have purchased Epson Ink Cartridges for over 10 years. I've had one or two issues but nothing serious until recently.
I purchased some cartridges lately online and the whole box was DRY.
I always shake the cartridges to hear the liquid inside, but NOTHING.
They need to start rotating their stock more frequently! In the meantime, I"m going back to non-Epson cartridges because I haven't had an issue with them.
User's recommendation: buy knock off cartridges because they are more reliable.
Helpful advice.
I called regarding a stuck printer and was given clear directions by the Customer Service representative on how to resolve the problem.
*** ink requirement
- - I destroyed an Epson printer with a hammer.
- - I bought a Brother printer and was happy for 5 yrs.
- - Remanufactured cartridges don't work in Epson.
I destroyed (with a sledge hammer) the last Epson printer I had because it sucked. I then bought a Brother printer and was happy with it for 5 years.
It finally broke and i thought i would try another EPSON printer only to find out that REMANUFACTURED cartridges will not work in them. This company sucks and does not deserve any of our business.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ANY EPSON COMPANY!!! They suck!
User's recommendation: DO NOT SUPPORT EPSON and their GESTAPO PRACTICES
