You have encountered the latest scam perpetrated by printer manufacturer's---their machines are programmed to not recognize any cartridge but the branded one. Apparently, non-branded ones are taking alot of money away from their over-priced sales, so they update their printers to not recognize any but their brand.
In your case, with using an Epson cartridge, you have a problem with the printer software. Try uninstalling it completely and then use something like ccleaner to clear out the registry and cache, etc.
of any remaining junk from your computer. Re-boot and then install the printer again and see what happens.
