I too will not buy another Epson printer. I have bought and fitted the cartridges sold by two different UK supermarkets, and for some reason its only the Y (yellow) cartridge(s) that the printer will not accept!

I have spent some time on the Internet trying to find a solution to the problem without success. I never had this problem with my HP Photosmart C4380 printer, which was many years old and was worn out (chewing up the paper) but was happy to accept non HP (independent supplier) inks.

EPSON - Is a criminal organization

I will NEVER buy another product from EPSON and am sharing my issues with everyone I know and on social media. I have the same exact issue as everyone else here has been writing about. Running an update that only served to force me to use THEIR ink should absolutely be illegal. I consider EPSON an evil business that uses predatory tactics. I never would have purchased this printer if I had known they would secretly sabotage it by making it useless after the time when I could not return it. Forcing people to use their extremely overpriced in or else! To me it's no different the taking your car in for a quick update and secretly having the company fix it so you could only buy THEIR brand of premium gas!

This firmware can be backed out to the previous version. Look it up.

Updated software causes printer unusable

Recently, my printer continually had messages telling me to download a software "update". I finally did that. After the download, the printer stopped working altogether, with a messaage "Ink cartridge is not recognized". Curiously, 2 were recognized and 3 were not. These cartridges were purchased from competitors to Epson. After several hours on the phone with Epson's technical support, they determined that I should buy all original Epson ink ($80, which is more than the printer cost) and then if it still didn't work, to call them back. I was very astonished by this advice and asked to speak to a manager. She said that she could not transfer my call. Really? No managers at Epson customer service call centers? My printer worked perfectly fine before the "update". DON'T BUY EPSON, THEY TRAP YOU INTO BUYING THEIR OVERPRICED INK!

Amen to that, I have the same problem. My XP-830 worked fine until firmware update.

The US Supreme Court ruled that OEM Cartridges must be allowed, yet Epson was able to render a printer I legally purchased, unto an absolutely useless piece of equipment, I will never touch an Epson product again. (after owning about 9 printers and usually had bought Epson ink)

Epson xp-434 printer

So I just updated my software/firmware and now I can't use my printer because I opted to purchase off brand, completely compatible ink cartridges that I have been using for the past 3 months. Now all the sudden I need to replace ALL my cartridges with "genuine Epson" cartridges. They are forcing me to buy their brand which is more than double the price of their competition. Well Epson I say NO. No thanks. My Epson printer will now be donated to goodwill and I will never buy Epson again. Here's a BIG *** Epson. I paid for this printer and it should be MY choice what kind of cartridge I want to install. This is BS.

Can't change ink cartridges without using their expensive ones.

The warning that not replacing ink cartridges with refilled cartridges is not recommended should be against the law. Consumers should be able to get less expensive cartridges. Your programming prevents that in the Epson 640 Expression Premium series. I received this printer for Christmas and I am very unhappy with it. I will NEVER buy an EPSON printer. They sell a cheap printer and then make sure we must use your expensive ink replacement cartridges. That is really a rip-off that should be illegal if it isn't. I have spent hours trying to get around this issued and I have contacted Epson about it. I have read other customer reviews that have had the same issue. Yet Epson has not resolved the issue.

As I recall, HP was also doing something of the kind a while back, at least on some of their printers. In any event, I have found that it is probably best to use the manufacturer's ink instead of off-brand or refilled cartridges.

I had far too many problems with non-brand ink cartridges in the past.

However, as you probably have guessed, they make their money on the ink cartridges, not the printers themselves. Gotta make a buck.

Bad Bad Bad

We bought our printer just over a year ago. We rarely use it for printing. But a lot for scanning. So it ran out of ink and we bought the color ones on line thru that pop up thing from the printer. We got the ink and we didn't use it for quite some time because we only ordered it for when we did run out. We bought it in July 2017. Well Jan 2018 we ran out of magenta. Took it out of the new unopened 3 pack box marked 220 and took vacuum plastic off it. Well it wouldn't work. So I messaged Epson and kept getting the runaround about how to get it to work. I had tried all those tricks several times. I'm not stupid, I know how to use a printer. They asked for pics of the old and new cartridges. I emailed them and they told me the I on the end of them meant they were the Initial ones that came with the printer when it was new and that they could not replace any of them. I didn't spend almost $30 to be told that. Seems to me someone put the wrong ones in the wrong box at the factory!!! But they made it sound like I was stupid and was trying to get a replacement for the old ones that came with it. After several weeks of back and forth they "claim" they will send me a magenta replacement. In the meantime I can't even scan with the printer. I have never owned something so *** And never owned a printer you can't do anything with when there is no ink. And WHY does it use color ink when you print in black n white? Never again will I buy another Epson brand anything!!!!

I wish I had seen this before purchasing the Epson WF2860, I thought I was getting a really good deal. At first we had a lot of connection issues, then my husband did seem to work them out, yet it took about a year.

Then we noticed the updates kept popping up, my husband and I both kept avoiding them because the printer was working great and we certainly didn't need any problems with that in our lives right now. Then my husband gave in and updated, the BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER! Now the printer is unusable, it won't recognize our generic ink cartridges. We have tried resets, new cartridges, just about anything you can think of to get this printer to work and still NOTHING!

This is where I started my research and found this site which was very insightful, all having the same issue as us, then the company not being helpful in anyway. It's a real shame that a company like Epson would take advantage of consumers the way they are, you now have lost another, we are done with Epso

Stopped working after Epson update.

Printer worked fine. Installed epson recommended update. Printer stopped working immediately after update. Will not allow cartridges that were working prior to update. Epson nailed me/us, now I have to buy 75.00 Epson ink to make it work again. Yes I did call their fixit line, said buy new ink (Epson). I’m in the market for a new printer instead Epson “shitholes”

Replacement ink cartridge do not work

I have a Epson workforce 2650 that had been working fine until the ink cartridge needed to be replaced. I have bought 2 sets of 220 ink but they do not work . Only the ink cartridge that came with printer works the 220 - I which is the initial ink that came with printer. I have spent over a $ 100 on replacement ink the printer only cost $ 59 . called the Epson service rep and nothing they can do other than give me a discount on a new printer. Buyer beware the replacement ink cartridges don't work in the printer - the office max who was working with me gave me one that was old from a printer on display so printing again but very light and will not last long. this is my last Epson printer

Epson is the most abusive company I have ever found. They asked users of their printers (mine is XP830) to update the firmware.

Once you do that, you realized that your cartridges do not work any more.

They have done this to prevent customers from using the much less expensive ink cartridges made by companies as EZ, and Jarbo.

With companies like this your only option is to boycott, and your friends to also boycott all product made by EPSON. That is the only defense you really have against an abusive business like this.
